A medium sized tree, usually 25' to 50' forming a cylindrical round topped crown.
Leaves: deciduous, alternate, simple with smooth margin, 3"- 6" long, shiny dark green above, paler and somewhat hairy on beneath, fall color.
Flowers: April-June, dioecious.
Fruit: October- December, orange to purple, may be 2" in diameter.
Twigs: gray to reddish brown, slender, false terminal bud giving a zigzag appearance.
Bark: brown to black, fissured, in block patterns.
Comments: Useful tree for erosion control along a bayou corridor due to its deep roots (including taproot), tough wood, good tree for wildlife.
